The Work Behind the Music: Alicia Liu at Carnegie Hall

Hugo Jensen

At the PRM Gala Concert at Carnegie Hall in New York on the evening of October 5, 2026, guest performer and organizer Alicia Jinyi Liu played a central role in bringing the event to the stage. Following the concert through its live stream and recording, the scale and coherence of the occasion offered a glimpse of the work behind it: artistic planning, preparation, and the many decisions that shape how performers and audiences experience a concert.

Liu brings substantial experience in two closely related fields: piano performance and music education. She holds a master’s degree in piano performance from Mannes School of Music and a master’s degree in music and music education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She has taught applied piano at Teachers College and, as founder and director of Music Pathway, leads programs that include private instruction, ensemble work, performance opportunities, and community music initiatives. Her work as a pianist and teacher gives her a perspective that reaches from the details of musical preparation to the wider conditions in which artists can learn and perform.

That perspective was reflected in her contribution to the gala. The planning involved more than arranging performances: it required an artistic vision for the event as a whole, careful preparation, and steady coordination on the day. Liu’s work helped create an environment in which performers could settle into the occasion and audiences could experience the program as a coherent whole.

The concert brought together members of the local community and performers who had travelled to New York from around the world. For many of them, appearing at Carnegie Hall would become a lasting point in their lives. Liu’s work as an arts leader helped make that shared experience possible. It shows how performance, teaching, and organization can meet in service of something larger: shaping an environment where more people can take part in the arts, grow through them, and carry the experience with them.
