At the Piano and Beyond It: Xu Tan and Her Students at Carnegie Hall

Hugo Jensen

At the PRM Gala Concert at Carnegie Hall in New York on the evening of October 5, 2026, guest performer Xu Tan was heard not only as a collaborative pianist, but also as a teacher whose influence extended well beyond the piano. Following the concert through its live stream and recording, one could sense how closely her work as a performer was connected to the young musicians around her.

Tan’s background brings together collaborative piano and composition, training that informs a broad and thoughtful approach to music. She holds a master’s degree in collaborative piano from the New England Conservatory and a bachelor’s degree in composition from the China Conservatory of Music. As founder and director of Musik Colab on Long Island, she has devoted much of her work to guiding young musicians, from their earliest studies to auditions for pre-college programs at leading conservatories and institutions.

That commitment was evident in the way Tan’s role reached beyond the performance itself. In preparing students for the concert and supporting them on the day, she helped create the conditions in which they could feel settled enough to perform. For young musicians facing the pressure of a major hall, a teacher’s calm presence, timely encouragement, and understanding of each student’s needs can matter as much as technical preparation. Tan’s contribution was felt in those moments of support as well as in her musical work at the piano.

The concert thus brought teacher and students into the same frame. Tan’s playing served the performers beside her, while her work as an educator had helped shape the musicianship they brought to the stage. The result was not simply a series of individual appearances, but a musical occasion shared by a teacher and the young artists she has helped nurture. Her presence offered a reminder that much of what sustains a concert begins long before the first note, and continues quietly behind the scenes.
