Liya Wang, a young Chinese pianist, won the Gold Medal, Audience Award, and Jury Special Award in the piano category by an overwhelming margin at the 74th ARD International Music Competition held in Munich, Germany, on September 14, 2025. She is the first mainland Chinese contestant to receive such honors since the competition was founded in 1952. This groundbreaking achievement not only filled the honorary gap for Chinese pianists in the top-tier ARD Competition but also injected a new dimension of aesthetics into the global classical music community.

As one of the world’s largest and most authoritative classical music competitions, the ARD International Music Competition is hosted by Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation) and is renowned for its rigorous judging standards and highly challenging competition format. The competition consists of four rounds of intensive contests, covering diverse segments such as solo performances, chamber music, concertos, and the interpretation of contemporary commissioned works. It comprehensively tests contestants’ technical skills, artistic expression, and cross-collaborative abilities, and its awards have long been regarded as the “Olympics” of the classical music world.
Notably, the artistic journey of this rising star in the international music scene began to shine as early as her youth. In 2019, Liya Wang won the Silver Award in the PRM Piano Competition Artist Category (the gold award was not awarded that year). Founded at New York’s Carnegie Hall, the PRM Competition is a top-tier international platform dedicated to nurturing young musical talents. It is well-known for its authoritative jury panel composed of legendary piano educators such as Gary Graffman, its global reach covering the Asia-Pacific, North America, and Australia-New Zealand regions, and its innovative competition format that includes orchestra accompaniment. As a cradle for cultivating top musicians, the award-winning contestants recognized by PRM have gradually grown into core forces on the international stage in recent years.
