A Shared Breath in Schumann: Pei-En Ho and Pin-hui Tsai at Carnegie Hall

Hugo Jensen

At the PRM Gala Concert at Carnegie Hall in New York on the evening of October 5, 2026, guest performers Pei-En Ho and Pin-hui Tsai played the second movement, “Lebhaft, leicht,” from Robert Schumann’s Fantasiestücke, Op. 73, for cello and piano. Heard through the concert’s live stream and recording, the performance was especially persuasive in its handling of musical phrasing.

The phrases felt natural and well judged. Longer lines gathered a quiet tension as they unfolded, while shorter ones entered and receded with a clear sense of timing. Neither kind of phrase seemed hurried or allowed to linger beyond its purpose. The performers gave each its own shape, so the music could move freely between moments of expansion and those that were brief and pointed.

That sense of phrasing was shared between the two players. Their breathing and timing seemed closely aligned, giving the cello line room to sing in a comfortable register. The piano responded with equal sensitivity. At times it filled out the cello’s phrase at just the right moment; at others, it drew back, leaving space for the cello to continue without interruption. These choices made the exchange feel attentive rather than arranged by formula.

The result was a performance with a strong sense of balance. Cello and piano retained their distinct roles, yet the music moved as a conversation shaped by a common understanding of where each phrase was going. The ease of that exchange gave Schumann’s movement both clarity and warmth.
